REGARDING RELIGIOUS
PERSECUTION
Whereas, we note with growing
alarm and concern that Christians in India have been the
target of reprehensible persecution in the form of physical
attack, grievous bodily injury and death, and destruction
of church and private properties; and
whereas, despite the lapse
of time, the authorities have failed to take any effective
action against the culprits who are mostly self-styled defenders
of the "Hindu" faith; and
whereas, the events in India
are a part of a growing world trend, such as the suppression
of house churches in China and other forms of persecution
in Indonesia, Egypt, Ulster, and other places; therefore
be it
Resolved: That this Congress
strongly condemns these atrocities which are an open violation
of basic human and constitutional rights, contrary to all
claims made by reasonable governments committed to the principles
of religious freedom; and be it further
Resolved: That we further call
upon these governments to immediately apprehend the criminal
elements responsible for these atrocities and to also take
prompt steps to protect the Christians from any further
violence. Failure to do so is criminal in itself.
