REGARDING MUSIC

Whereas, music is a vital part of worship and is mentioned many times in our infallible Bible, which admonishes us to sing Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in our hearts to the Lord; and

whereas, good music and poor music are in use today; and

whereas, we believe that music used in worship of God should express the praises of God, honor the glories of the Lord, reveal the truth of God's Word, teaching sound doctrine in its texts, and should be an illustration of the character and attributes of the Lord; and

whereas, self-styled "artists" of the Contemporary Christian Music industry are acknowledging the deterioration and degrading effect of their product, with one of their own referring to the doctrines of CCM as "theological ebonics" and asking the obvious when he questions, "Could it be the love of money at the root of it all?"; and

whereas, our brethren in the former Soviet Union have pled with us not to desecrate their teenagers with CCM; and

whereas, no musicians have ever advanced the false claim that music itself is neutral until the CCM movement first put forth this argument; therefore be it

Resolved: That this Congress aligns itself with the Word of God through music that is truly scriptural in purpose and performance; and be it further

resolved: That we urge Bible-believing pastors and missionaries to study the theology of music in the Word of God and teach it to their congregations and converts, warning them of carnal counterfeits. Although music involves matters of taste, musical choices are never made on the basis of taste alone. We believe that it is possible and essential to know whether music honors the Lord and His Word, and we are resolved to use no other.
