REGARDING MUSIC
Whereas,
music is a vital part of worship and is mentioned many times
in our infallible Bible, which admonishes us to sing Psalms
and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody
in our hearts to the Lord; and
whereas,
good music and poor music are in use today; and
whereas,
we believe that music used in worship of God should express
the praises of God, honor the glories of the Lord, reveal
the truth of God's Word, teaching sound doctrine in its
texts, and should be an illustration of the character and
attributes of the Lord; and
whereas,
self-styled "artists" of the Contemporary Christian Music
industry are acknowledging the deterioration and degrading
effect of their product, with one of their own referring
to the doctrines of CCM as "theological ebonics" and asking
the obvious when he questions, "Could it be the love of
money at the root of it all?"; and
whereas,
our brethren in the former Soviet Union have pled with us
not to desecrate their teenagers with CCM; and
whereas,
no musicians have ever advanced the false claim that music
itself is neutral until the CCM movement first put forth
this argument; therefore be it
Resolved:
That this Congress aligns itself with the Word of God through
music that is truly scriptural in purpose and performance;
and be it further
resolved:
That we urge Bible-believing pastors and missionaries to
study the theology of music in the Word of God and teach
it to their congregations and converts, warning them of
carnal counterfeits. Although music involves matters of
taste, musical choices are never made on the basis of taste
alone. We believe that it is possible and essential to know
whether music honors the Lord and His Word, and we are resolved
to use no other.
